Is advisable to install the older version of operating system first prior to installing win 7 and even if you succeed in installing, you would encounter startup issue later on

You want to switch from Windows 7 to Windows XP? If so, you are doing
it wrong.
You are trying to install it from within Windows 7. The correct way to
do it is to boot from the Windows XP CD (if necessary, first change
the boot order in the BIOS setup program to make the CD drive first).
Then follow the prompts for a clean installation. The clean
installation will begin by formatting the drive (so make sure you've
first backed up anything you need to external media) so it doesn't
care what, if anything, is already on the drive.

Hi,
Would you like to install Windows XP on different partition as dual boot or just install Windows XP Mode in Windows 7? If you would like to install Windows XP Mode,
please access the link below to download Windows Virtual Machine and Windows XP Mode.
Windows XP Mode
Otherwise, I suggest you refer to the following article to install Windows XP as dual boot.

Note: Please back up the data in Windows 7 before installing Windows XP to avoid unexpected situation.
